Career Development

Hello everyone! My name is Alicia Shen from Management Recruiters of McLean. I specialize in recruiting in the Food industry. I was asked to share some experience with you all about job hunting. Well, where to begin with? Resume is an important door opener so today I'am going to talk about Resume Writing.

When you apply for a job, most likely the first thing the hiring company sees is your resume. They determine who to select for first-round interviews based on what they see on your resume. I have read thousands of resume and here are my thoughts on writing a resume that will maximize your chances to be selected for interviews.

Personalize your resume to highlight your skills that are required for the position

If you are applying for a specific job, read the job ads very carefully. Each job posting lists what are the qualifications and requirement. Include the key words in your resume if you can. When I read resumes I have received, the first thing I look for is the key words that match the job description. Lot of times there is none and that's when those candidates will be considered as not qualified. When hiring managers or human resources read resumes, they typically spend less than 2 minutes on each resume so put he key words there! Avoid sending a generic version of your resume without tailoring the specific job is also very important. Each job has different responsibilities and requirements. It really pays off if you spend some time and modify your resume for each job you apply for.

Resume format (Open Sample Resume)

An organized and neat resume format make your resume easy to read. A format that typically works well is:

Objective
Skills Summary (highly recommended)
Education Professional Experience or Work Experience
Professional Society Membership (if any)
Publications (if any)
References

There is really no such rule as "one-page" resume. If you are a fresh Bachelor graduate or you don't have much experience, one page is enough. However, for Master and PhD candidates, please put the good research experience and the methodologies you use. There is a reason for companies to hire Master or PhD degreed candidates so write your resume like a professional.

Lastly but not the least, Cover Letter

I have received resume with a cover letter without emphasis. The purpose of having a cover letter is to tell the reader you have the skills or experience to do the job they want to fill. Don't put a lengthy paragraph with a general description of you. The best way to write a cover letter is to point out you have the list of the skills the position asks for.

Please proofread your resume and cover letter before you send them out. Common mistakes are spelling, dates, wrong company name you address to, etc.
